Rubber aerobic matting and plyometric mats will provide moderate protection from premature wear and’ tear of the joints. As well, this protection will enable the joints and muscles to endure movement over a long period of time thereby prolonging the workout and achieving a beneficial cardio workout. Of course this will strengthen cardiac muscles, burn calories and will increase bone density. Aerobic floors that are too spongy or soft will not contribute to bone density as much as a firmer aerobic flooring Source: WebMD

FAQ: Aerobic Flooring
1. My husband and I own a neighborhood woman’s gym in Los Angeles, California. Due to a rental increase we must include men in our fitness program, yuck~! Since the men use Olympic bench press and heavier barbells, etc. we feel we must use a thick rubber floor. Please enlighten us.

A: This is a good question. Weight room flooring should be denser than aerobic rubber floors. We suggest acquiring both. For the weight room area 3/8” thick high density rubber and aerobic exercise area also 3/8” but low density rubber. If your budget permits ˝” for both would be best, especially for the aerobic training area.

2. Due to budget constraints our commercial aerobic center must use the 3/8” even though; according to your web site ˝” is recommended. Can we use the 3/8” aerobic rubber for a commercial aerobic center?

A: Yes! However, the 1/2" will provide your gym club members with more anti-fatigue properties, especially on the joints. Over-weight members and seniors will really appreciate the 1/2" thick aerobic floor.

3. We are scheduling a re-grand opening for a fitness center in Houston, Texas and we’ll include an aerobic training to our exercise program. Our landlord does not want us to use glue on the concrete floor. Can your aerobic flooring be applied on the floor without adhesive?

A: Yes, the aerobic flooring is heavy; ˝” thick weighs 3.4 lbs per square foot, 3/8” 2.5 lbs. per square foot. So the point is; the weight alone would permit a loose-lay application. Perhaps your landlord will permit the use of double-sided floor tape. Remember, the owner of the gym is responsible to produce a safe environment without tripping hazards. Using adhesive is recommended but not required.

5. We just opened a fitness center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Our small business does not have a maintenance crew so my husband and I will do the cleaning. I guess the question is how time consuming will it be to keep the aerobic floor clean? How do you clean it?

A: Rubber is easy to clean and maintain. Here are some preventative methods to keep dirt out of your fitness center: Before entering the building, make sure you have a scraper mat so gym members can wipe their feet before entering the building. A friendly sign on the door that reads, “Pls. Keep Our Gym Clean. WIPE FEET BEFORE ENTERING, thank you!” broadcast that cleanliness is a priority. Then, upon entering the lobby of the gym a long carpet runner mat would help collect dirt before entering the gym area. How to Clean Rubber Flooring: Mix one cup of highly scented mild dish washing liquid in one gallon of water and mop dry. Another option is mix one cup of white vinegar in one gallon of hot water map, then mop dry. Perhaps adding a couple cap full of lemon, or a few drops of the essential oil would produce a nice aroma.

6. The fitness program we have here in Phoenix; Arizona is mostly aerobic exercise which includes step-class, bar method training and spinning classes. We choose not to use your rubber aerobic flooring in the spinning room because, according to my research, rubber will muffle the sound. The cement floor echoes the music and improves the acoustics, especially the bass. Sorry for the rambling. Back to the subject: In our aerobic exercise studio we have only 2 dumbbell racks. Finally the question; can we place the dumbbell rack on top of your rubber aerobic flooring?

A: It depends on how heavy the rack is and how wide the foot pads are on the rack legs. We’ll have to say no. We recommend placing a plywood plank under the dumbbell rack.-paint it black for aesthetic reasons / to match the aerobic floor color. This will prevent premature wear on the rubber floor. Another options-and this may save you a couple of bucks- is to place the dumbbell rack or the bench press directly on the concrete and floor [verb] around the fitness equipment. Paint the concrete black in places you decide not to use the black aerobic flooring.

7. We are undecided whether to use the plastic aerobic floor tiles or the rubber aerobic rolls. What are the advantages/disadvantages of both?

It depends on several factors. The aerobic plastic tiles are more expensive but need less maintenance/are easier to clean. As well if noise abatement is feature you need then the rubber aerobic rolls is a better option. With respect to aesthetics, faux-wood and marble options will add beauty to private fitness club -vs- the black only aerobic floors.

8. Our private senior citizen center in Miami, Florida needs an exercise floor for senior citizens. We have a gentle fitness class and need a soft floor. The most important requirement is to be soft on the seniors joints. What do you recommend?

Firstly, none of our floors are 'soft.' However, with a combination of our flexible floor tiles over our aerobic rubber flooring will provide the best in anti-fatigue features. This is a more permanent exercise floor because it would take hours to disassemble the exercise floor.

9. We are the owners of a small community fitness center in Long Beach, California. My wife added an aerobic dance class. However, we also have to share the space with a martial arts class. The question is: Can we use the 1/2" thick rubber aerobic rolls for martial arts also?

Yes, however, if there's body throwing, judo-like throws then we do not recommend the rubber aerobic flooring. Rubber by its nature is ant-slip so footing will be secure, especially with footwear. We don't want anybody injured, so consider the 1-1/2" or 2" thick wrestling mats.

10. We need a dance aerobic floor. My staff and I were thinking out loudly. We want to use the 3/8” thick aerobic floor tiles rolls under the plastic aerobic floor tiles. Can we have your opinion on this option?

If your budget can absorb the expense then your patrons will absorb the shock as this will provide superior anti-fatigues properties more than any aerobic floor on the US market today! This creative option would give the aerobic dancers less restriction on the ball of their feet while turning or performing a pirouette. Whereas, turning on rubber is more restrictive because it’s anti-slip. In addition the added bounce and anti-fatigue enhancements of the dual-ply of the rubber under plastic aerobic tiles will have more fun to your class, abate noise and vibrations from the music and the pounding of the dancers. This will please your neighbors and enhance verbal instructions to the class from the aerobics instructor..

11. Our fitness center in San Diego, California purchased your aerobic rubber floor about two years ago. We truly love it. We would like our small lobby to welcome our potential members with the same floor we use in the aerobic room. This way they can ‘feel’ the floor. We know that if our potential patrons feel they floor they will join our fitness club. What do you think about this idea?

This is a great marketing tool to have your potential members ‘feel’ the floor before paying for gym membership. Kudos to your marketing team who though to this method to promote your gym. We don’t see a negative aspect to this application. The lobby is subject to street shoes so do expect the maintenance time to increase in the lobby. Two entrance-way mats and/or wiper mats before the lobby carpet tile entrance would help catch dirt prior to entry.

12. I'm a track and field coach in Palmdale, California and need a track and field instant runway. Will the 1/2" thick suffice?

The rubber denseness is ideal for an instant runway for track and field. This is not the very hard weight room flooring. Our plyometric mat rolls is anti-fatigue and anti-slip.

13. Can we use the aerobic rubber flooring for a weight room floor? And, can we use the weight room floor as an step aerobic flooring?

Yes, the aerobic flooring can be used for light weights but not for a bench press because the weight is too heavy. And no, you can't use the denser weight room floor for aerobics because it's too firm and will not provide any anti-fatigue properties to your exercises.

14. We would like to use the rubber mat outdoors near a swimming pool diving board over a water drainage area. Can do?

We do not recommend this as an outdoor mat. Yes, rubber is water-proof. Perhaps a perforated drainage mat will suffice?

15. Not sure if your aerobic rubber tiles will work for an indoor play area for my kidz. What do you folks think?

The aerobic floor tiles made of rubber will provide limited protection from falls. Remember, rubber is not foam; the difference being that foam will absorb falls better. However, rubber will provide more secure footing. Please no tumbling, wrestling or judo throws are recommended. Folding tumbling mats are another option to consider.

16. Is there such a product as a peel and stick rubber floor? We don't want to use the messy glue to glue it to our concrete floor.

There is no such product. The interlocking rubber gym tiles do not need to be glued down to the floor, FYI. The rubber rolls can float or be taped down to the floor. If it's a commercial envirnment, due to liability reasons, we recommend using our adhesive.
